EU design package: Insurance Europe welcomes harmonised repair clause

11-10-2024

Insurance Europe welcomes the adoption of the new EU design package, approved by the Council of the European Union on 10 October. The package includes the Industry Design Directive (recast) and the amended Regulation on Community Designs, and introduces a single and harmonised European repair clause. This clause exempts spare parts used in the repair of complex products, such as car parts, from design protection.

The repair clause, set to take effect after an eight-year transition period, is expected to bring major social and economic benefits. It will lower repair costs for cars, thereby increasing consumer purchasing power, and stimulate job creation and entrepreneurship in the European automotive aftermarket.

The adoption of the new design package marks a significant step forward for both consumers and businesses, promoting greater competitiveness in the European automotive industry.
