Cover Notes: A conversation with Petra Hielkema

Insurance Europe was delighted to hold a webinar featuring new EIOPA chair Petra Hielkema discussing her vision for European insurance regulation with our director general, Michaela Koller.

Speaker biographies

Petra Hielkema has just taken up the role of EIOPA chair.

Previously, she was division director responsible for insurance supervision at De Nederlandsche Bank, the Dutch central bank, which she joined in 2007.

In 2013, she became the bank’s head of insurance policy then, in 2015, she was appointed head of the bank’s expert centre for fit and proper testing, assessing supervisory and management board members in the financial sector. In 2017, she became director of payments and market infrastructures and was responsible for the payments and collateral operations of the central bank, oversight, policy and cyber intelligence. She was an alternate member of EIOPA’s Board of Supervisors and chaired EIOPA’s Policy Committee.

Prior to joining the Dutch central bank, Hielkema had an international career in the oil and gas industry. She has a European master’s degree in law and a master’s degree in Russian studies. She is married with three children.

Michaela Koller has been director general of Insurance Europe since 2007. She is currently secretary general of the Global Federation of Insurance Associations (GFIA) and chairs EIOPA’s insurance and reinsurance stakeholder group. She was previously a member of the management committee of the European Savings Banks Group and the World Savings Banks Institute.
